Before Partnership with Voyage

  • Over the course of a year, a client of ours reported a total of 33 injuries:26 were recordable incidents.
  • 7 were classified as first aid cases.
  • The client faced a significant financial burden, with an average deductible of $65,000, based on a $2,500 deductible per claim. Additionally, the client’s Experience Modification Rate (X-Mod) skyrocketed from 110 to 282, leading to increased workers’ compensation insurance premiums due to their high-risk exposure.

After Partnership with Voyage

  • In the following year, the number of injuries was significantly reduced to 17:12 were recordable incidents.
  • 5 were first aid cases.
  • Thanks to our contract, the client paid zero deductibles. Moreover, the client’s X-Mod began to decrease due to the reduced exposure and improved safety record.

How We Achieved This

Data Collection and Analysis:

  • We started by tracking every near miss and analyzing prior loss run data provided by our client. Through this analysis, we identified that the most frequent injuries were occurring due to:
  • Employee carelessness.
  • Poor ergonomic processes.
  • Unsafe equipment.

Strategic Outsourcing:

  • As an additional protective measure, the client outsourced their entire workforce to Voyage. This move allowed them to eliminate their high workers’ compensation rates, significantly reducing their risk exposure.

Actions Taken

  • Addressing Employee Carelessness

We implemented rigorous training programs and policies focused on the safety violations we identified. Employees were held accountable for not adhering to safety protocols, fostering a strong safety culture within the organization.

  • Improving Ergonomic Processes

To reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries, we instituted a position rotation policy where employees rotated every two hours. Additionally, we enforced a daily stretching routine before the start of each shift.

  • Enhancing Equipment Safety

Unsafe equipment and machinery were identified, and we collaborated with the client’s maintenance team to install safety protection measures, reducing the likelihood of equipment-related injuries.

  • Safety Incentive Program

To motivate employees, we introduced a Safety Incentive Program. Employees were encouraged to complete a month injury-free, with rewards such as food raffles and other small activities as incentives.

Statistical Impact

  • Injury Reduction

The total number of injuries decreased by approximately 48.5%, from 33 to 17.

  • Financial Savings

By partnering with us and using our insurance system, the client eliminated the need for deductibles. This shift resulted in approximately $65,000 in annual savings. Since they no longer needed to cover deductible costs for reported incidents, they could allocate their budget more efficiently and reduce overall financial risks.

  • X-Mod Improvement

The client’s X-Mod, which had previously increased to 282, began to decline, leading to reduced workers’ compensation premiums over time.

This case study illustrates how strategic interventions and a strong focus on safety can lead to significant improvements in both compliance and employee morale.
